Eligible respondents for this study include individuals aged 50 and over and their spouses or partners of any age.

A nationally representative sample of at least 8,000 adults aged 50 and over, resident in Ireland, was selected using a population sift. The selected addresses were visited by an interviewer from Ipsos MORI and all persons aged 50 or over (and their spouses/partners of any age) were canvassed to participate in the survey. 8,504 participants were recruited to the study. These include 8,175 respondents aged 50+ and 329 younger partners of eligible individuals. The household response rate to the study was 62%.

TILDA 2012 main questionnaire was completed by a face-to-face, computer-assisted interview and supplemented by a self-completed questionnaire.  Questions were asked on health, housing, social support, work, retirement, pensions and quality of life.  Since Wave 1 a number of new questions were added,  including some on personality.  There was no separate health assessment during this wave, but the interviewers took a measure of handgrip strength and walking speed when they visited participants in their homes.
