Information on socio-demographics (age, parity, family structure, and number of children in the house), and medical and pregnancy history were obtained by questionnaires. Information on socioeconomic factors (annual household income, education, marital status and employment) was also collected. Maternal diets were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire adapted for the urban middle class residing in South Asia. Maternal physical activity was assessed to capture information on occupational activity outside the house, discretionary exercise, household chores, and sedentary activities.

Information on psychosocial stress was collected and includes questions about maternal depression and social support.

Detailed anthropometric measurements (weight, height, maternal BMI, maternal weight gain, skinfold thickness and mid-upper arm circumference as well as blood pressure) of all pregnant mothers occurred during the second trimester. The results of an ultrasound performed between 18-24 weeks was recorded from each pregnant mothers to assess for congenital anomalies and fetal growth characteristics and for precise determination of gestational age.

An urine sample and a fasting blood sample were collected at 24-28 weeks of gestation. All non-diabetic mothers underwent the 75 oral glucose tolerance test between 24-28 weeks of gestational age.
