A representative sample of men and women aged 20 - 79 years was drawn from the central population registry using a stratified random sampling scheme with age, sex and county as strata. The SHIP-TREND population largely overlaps with the SHIP-START-0 population, but the samples do not overlap.

Information is collected about sociodemographic characteristics (education, marital status, household income), lifestyle behaviours (nutrition, physical activity, leisure activities), behavioural risk factors (smoking, alcohol consumption), visual functioning, quality of life (EuroQol five dimensions questionnaire), oral health, women's health, diseases, injuries, health services utilization, medication, mental health (depression, post-traumatic stress disorder), cognitive function (Stroop Color and Word Test, Word List Memory Test), childhood trauma (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire), and social contacts. Physical measures such as anthropometry (weight, height, BMI, body circumferences), body impedance, circulatory health (blood pressure, electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, vascular ultrasound), grip strength, skin health (dermatological examination), digestive health (liver ultrasound and dental examination), and diagnostic data (magnetic resonance tomography) are collected. Blood, urine, stool, and saliva samples are collected. Nose, mouth, and skin swabs are also collected.
