A representative sample of men and women aged 20 - 79 years was drawn from the central population registry using a stratified random sampling scheme with age, sex and county as strata. The SHIP-TREND population largely overlaps with the SHIP-START-0 population, but the samples do not overlap.

Information is collected about sociodemographic characteristics (education, marital status, household income, household structure, occupation), lifestyle behaviours (nutrition, physical activity, sleep), behavioural risk factors (smoking, alcohol consumption), quality of life (EuroQol five dimensions questionnaire), oral health, women's health, family health history, diseases, injuries, visual functioning, health services utilization, treatments and interventions (medication, disease screening, surgeries), depression, childhood trauma (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire), cognitive function (Stroop Color and Word Test, Word List Memory Test), childhood trauma (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire), and social contacts, and hazardous workplace exposures. Physical measures such as anthropometry (weight, height, BMI, body circumferences), body composition (body impedance), circulatory health (blood pressure, electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, vascular ultrasound), skin health (dermatological examination), skeletal health (bone density), digestive health (liver ultrasound and dental examination), and diagnostic data (magnetic resonance tomography) are collected. Blood and urine samples are collected. Nose, mouth, and throat swabs are also collected.
