A representative sample of men and women aged between 20 and 79 years was drawn using a two-stage stratified and cluster sampling scheme. First, 32 communities in the region were selected. Second, within the communities a simple random sample was drawn from residence registries, stratified by gender and age.

Information is collected about sociodemographic characteristics (marital status, household structure, occupation), lifestyle behaviours (nutrition, physical activity, leisure activities, sleep), behavioural risk factors (smoking, alcohol consumption), reproductive history (for women only), diseases, oral health, injuries, health services utilization, medication, mental health, cognitive functioning (Mini-Mental State Examination), social contacts. Physical measures such as anthropometry (weight, height, body circumferences), bioelectrical impedance, blood pressure, electrocardiogram, ultrasounds (heart, artery, thyroid, liver, gallbladder), pulmonary function, handgrip strangth, dental status, periodental status, 3d body scan, and whole body magnetic resonance tomography imaging data are collected. Blood, urine, stool, and saliva samples are collected.
