A representative sample of men and women aged between 20 and 79 years was drawn using a two-stage stratified and cluster sampling scheme. First, 32 communities in the region were selected. Second, within the communities a simple random sample was drawn from residence registries, stratified by gender and age.

Information is collected about sociodemographic characteristics (marital status, household income, household structure, occupation), lifestyle behaviours (nutrition, physical activity, leisure activities, sleep, means of transportation), behavioural risk factors (smoking, alcohol consumption), quality of life (EuroQol five dimensions questionnaire), reproductive history (for women only), diseases, injuries, health services utilization, medication, mental health (Composite International Diagnostic Interview), cognitive functioning (Mini-Mental State Examination), social contacts, and workplace environment (pressures and conditions at work). Physical measures such as anthropometry (weight, height, body circumferences), body impedance, blood pressure, electrocardiogram, ultrasounds (heart, artery, thyroid, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and kidney), dermatological function, endothelial funtion, pulmonary function, bone stiffness, dental status, periodental status, and 3D body scan data are collected. Blood, stool, saliva, and urine samples are collected. Nose, mouth, and throat swabs are also collected.
