A representative sample of men and women aged between 20 and 79 years was drawn using a two-stage stratified and cluster sampling scheme. First, 32 communities in the region were selected. Second, within the communities a simple random sample was drawn from residence registries, stratified by gender and age.

Information is collected about sociodemographic characteristics (education, marital status, household income, household structure, occupation), lifestyle behaviours (nutrition, sports, leisure activities, sleep, means of transportation), behavioural risk factors (smoking, alcohol consumption), quality of life (Short-Form 36 Health Survey), reproductive history (for women only), family health history, diseases, injuries, health services utilization, medication, subjective well-being and mental health (Short-Form 12 Health Survey), cognitive functioning (Mini-Mental State Examination), social network, social contacts, workplace, housing, and neighbourhood environment. Neurological screening is conducted. Physical measures such as anthropometry (weight, height, BMI, body circumferences), blood pressure, electrocardiogram, body ultrasounds (heart, arteries, thyroid, liver), dental status and periodental status are collected. Blood and urine samples are collected.
