SHIP - START cohort
A representative sample of men and women aged between 20 and 79 years was drawn using a two-stage stratified and cluster sampling scheme. First, 32 communities in the region were selected. Second, within the communities a simple random sample was drawn from residence registries, stratified by gender and age.

Information was collected about positive and negative life events (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire), depression (Beck Depression Inventory II), personality (Life Orientation Test-Revised, Sense of Coherence Scale-Leipzig Short Scale, the Resilience Scale, NEO-Five-Factor Model, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations), social support (Perceived Social Support Questionnaire), stress, and general health (12-Item Short Form Survey).
An in-depth diagnostic interview for mental disorders was performed based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (IV edition) diagnostic criteria.
