SHA population

The population is composed of adult males and females incarcerated in both a large men’s provincial prison (Regina Provincial Correctional Centre) and a small women’s remand facility (White Birch Female Remand Unit) in Regina, who are sentenced for less than two years or are awaiting trial. The female participants from the White Birch Remand Centre will be involved if this facility opens during the study period.

Exclusion criteria: Anyone in isolation with active SARS-CoV-2 or or under investigation for COVID-19 as a close contact of a diagnosed case; and/or anyone with symptoms compatible with COVID-19.

Other Criteria

Inclusion criteria: Incarcerated at a facility for more than 24 hours; and the ability to understand and consent to study participation.

Exclusion criteria: Anyone posing a security risk to the research team, as determined by correctional officers.

Data Collection Event

SHA - Data collection

A questionnaire are used to assess socio-demographic characteristics (age, ethnicity, education, income, and housing condition), information on risk factors (occupation and chronic conditions, including HIV) and COVID-19 clinical symptoms and relevant exposures (recent travel, incarceration conditions, access to personal protective equipment, etc.). Serologic test kits were used for the detection of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2.
