The study sample was drawn from a sub-sample of respondents interviewed in the 1999 Taiwan Longitudinal Study of Aging (TLSA).

Two visits were made to respondents' homes: one to administer a face-to-face questionnaire and the second, several weeks later, to deliver urine collection containers and make final arrangements for a hospital examination the following morning. The questionnaire included measures of health status (physical, emotional, and cognitive), health behaviours, social relationships and exposure to stressors. The physical examination was generally equivalent to an annual physical examination offered by the national health insurance programme. A 12-h (7 am to 7 pm) urine specimen was collected the night before and a fasting blood specimen was collected during the physical examination. Trained staff measured blood pressure, height, weight and waist and hip circumferences.
