The population is composed of individuals living in the Australian Capital Territory and the neighbouring town of Queanbeyan in the adjoining state of New South Wales and who are aged 60-64 years (birth years 1937-41) at the start of the study.

A broad range of fixed and time-varying risk factors and moderators have been collected in the interviews. These include information on demographics, health, stressors, social aspects, self-reported mental health, psychological scales, and self-reported general health. Cognitive measures (e.g. memory, reaction time) were also taken. Physical measures (FEV, grip strength, blood pressure, pulse) were taken. Cheek swabs were collected at the baseline interview for the extraction of DNA for genetic analysis. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) substudy: At wave 1, a subsample of the 60+ cohort received a brain MRI and blood tests. Health and Memory substudy: Participants in the 60+ cohort who performed poorly on selected cognitive tests were asked to complete a detailed neurocognitive assessment and to undergo an MRI scan and blood test. Each cohort was interviewed over 1 year. The participants were aged 60-64 years.
