The population is composed of individuals living in the Australian Capital Territory and the neighbouring town of Queanbeyan in the adjoining state of New South Wales and who are aged 20-24 years (birth years 1975-79) at the start of the study.

A broad range of fixed and time-varying risk factors and moderators have been collected in the interviews. These include information on demographics, health, stressors, social aspects, self-reported mental health, psychological scales, and self-reported general health. Cognitive measures (e.g., memory, reaction time) were taken. Physical measures (FEV, grip strength, blood pressure, pulse) were also taken. Cheek swabs were collected at the baseline interview for the extraction of DNA for genetic analysis. Each cohort was interviewed over 1 year. The participants were aged 20-24 years.
