The NZHWR population comprises older adults who live in New Zealand and were randomly sampled from the New Zealand Electoral Roll.

Data was collected via postal questionnaire. The questionnaire included sections on health (SF-12 health survey; chronic disease; depression (CESD-10); alcohol use (AUDIT-C); physical activity; tobacco use)), quality of life (CASP-12; WHOQoL), loneliness (De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale), social support (Social Provisions Scale; Practitioner Assessment of Network Type), childcare, discrimination, sexual functioning, religiosity, caregiving, employment, income and economic living standards (ELSI-SF), retirement and demographic information. Participants identifying as Māori were asked to complete an additional section about genealogy/relationships and cultural identity. Face to face cognitive assessment interviews were conducted with a subsample of n = 1000 participants. The interview included questions on cognitive performance (ACE-R), demographics, income and assets, health (SF-12 health survey), depression (CESD-10), and anxiety (GAI). The ACE-R was modified for use with New Zealanders and assessed areas of memory, attention and orientation, verbal fluency, language, and visuospatial performance. Questions regarding participant’s experiences of an earthquake centred in the Canterbury region of New Zealand (September 4, 2010) shortly before the interviews commenced were also administered.
