The sample included adult population of women who were evacuated from the fires in Fort McMurray in May 2016 while pregnant or those who became pregnant within 6 months after evacuation. Each subject was randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups. The women in this group wrote a journal addressing their innermost feelings.

At the time of recruitment, women’s prenatal maternal stress (PNMS) and their degree of objective hardship due to fires were assessed and measured with questionnaires. Participants in this treatment group completed short bursts of expressive writing each day for four days about their innermost feelings. Following the consent, all participants completed questionnaires about demographics background, coping style (Brief COPE and Brief R-COPE), maternal social support (Social Support Questionnaire), maternal experience (Peritraumatic Dissociative Experience Questionnaire), PTSD symptoms (Impact of Event Scale) and maternal anxiety (Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety), stress (Perceived Stress Scale) and depression (Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale). Resilience was assessed with the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale as well as with their responses to post-journaling questions after analysis of the content of their reflections (in journaling and post-journaling).
