The population is composed of the infants delivered prematurely between 23 0/7 and 28 6/7 weeks of gestation whose mothers were randomized to receive either a placebo or a supplementation providing 1.2g of DHA per day.

Information related to the trial such as protocol deviations and reason for study exit was collected. Blood pressure, heart rate, and blood pH were also measured within 0 to 12 hours of age. Information on gestational age, sex, date and time of birth, and hospitalization-related information (transfers, birth hospital, discharge), delivery-related information, such as infant presentation, Apgar score, resuscitation at birth, and need for intubation in the delivery room, was recorded from medical records soon after birth. Information on respiratory distress syndrome, pneumothorax, hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosis, death, necrotizing enterocolitis, isolated bowel perforation, retinopathy of prematurity, hypoglycemia, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, seizures, intraventricular hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, cerebellar hemorrhage, periventricular leukomalacia, congenital anomalies, surgical procedures, the highest total bilirubin during hospitalization at NICU, and medication intake such as antibiotics, surfactant, post-natal corticosteroids, insulin, and sildenafil was collected from medical records up to 40 weeks’ PMA. Information on supplements (caffeine, diuretics, probiotics, iron), nutrition (formula, donor milk, breastfeeding, amount of expressed breast milk from mothers, parenteral nutrition), need for respiratory support (nasal prongs flow, nasal cannula, FiO₂, mechanical ventilation), and anthropometric measurements (weight, length, and head circumference) was collected from medical records up to 36 weeks’ PMA. Information on infant adverse events (severity, adverse reaction, related treatments) was collected from medical records up to 40 weeks’ PMA.
