Population

LUCAS population

The population is composed of independently living community-dwelling persons, aged 60 years and older, without need of nursing care (German long-term care insurance) or cognitive impairment.

The participants were recruited from 21 general practitioner (GP) practices in Hamburg.

At wave 2, to compensate for the losses since baseline, the LUCAS cohort was supplemented by the eligible patients from an additional GP practice.

At baseline, participants must not suffer from cognitive impairment or a terminal disease and not be in need of professional nursing care, or human assistance with daily activities.

Other Criteria

The GPs excluded those patients with (a) a need of human assistance with basic activities of daily living (ADL) or needing professional nursing care (according to the German long-term care insurance system); (b) cognitive impairment (equivalent to a Mini Mental Status score ≤24; (c) terminal disease; and/or (d) inability to understand German

Supplementary Information about selection criteria

Information on health in old age generated periodically in the LUCAS cohort is largely comparable with that from representative cross-sectional studies and statistics registries.

General practitioners (GPs) from the metropolitan area of Hamburg were invited to participate via the newsletter of the regional GP association. Twenty-one GPs working in solo practices agreed to participate and were recruited. These GPs generated complete lists of all their patients aged 60 years and older. Eligible community-dwelling older people on the GPs' lists were invited to participate.

Data Collection Event

LUCAS - Wave 2

At Wave 2, all participants, including the newly recruited ones, filled a questionnaire (HRA-O) that collected information on sociodemographic characteristics, diverse self-reported aspect of health such as self-perceived health, mood memory, co-morbidity, pain, medication use, preventive care use, functional status, falls and risk of falls, vision, hearing, oral health, physical activity, nutrition, alcohol use, tobacco use, means of transportation, use of urban activity space and health behaviour attitudes.

These key questions were supplemented by additional questions on psychological items, physical and mental activities, health literacy, income and use of urban activity space. Furthermore, comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) data were collected by specialists from randomly selected LUCAS subgroup samples (robust, post-robust, pre-frail, frail) identified with the LUCAS functional ability index in wave 2.
