The population is composed of unexposed to COVID-19 residents of two a long-term care facility (LTCF) campuses; Northwood campuses and the St. Vincent campus, in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Inclusion:
Resident of a long-term care facility;
Able to provide consent either directly by the participant, or surrogate in the event of a medical emergency and/or subject who is not capable of providing informed consent;
Able to answer clinical questions and provide medical history directly (the patient) or via a surrogate.

The study opportunity was advised by medical leadership through written letter and by word of mouth to all long-term care facility residents and their substitute decision makers (SDM) (for those who are unable to provide informed consent). Those residents or SDM who consent to talk with the study team then are contacted by a study team member.

Supplementary Information about selection criteria: A subset of the Wave 2 low prevalence cohort (N=60) will be examined for T and B cell immunity and the remainder will be biobanked for future studies aimed at understanding immunity and biomarkers in vulnerable older persons.

Data Collection Event

LIFE-CO - COVID-19 unexposed - Baseline

Blood samples were collected by venipuncture for immunity measures. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike serology was performed using plasma. After eligibility criteria were reviewed and confirmed, information about demographic that includes sex, self-identified race/ethnicity, and age; medical history including tobacco, diseases, flu shot and care provider; current medications; routine laboratory testing and COVID-19 assessment such as testing, symptoms, exposures was collected from resident’s charts. An updated long term care comprehensive geriatric assessment (LTC-CGA) which measures frailty and the Hierarchical Assessment of Balance and Mobility (HABAM) which measures and tracks progression of balance and mobility were abstracted from residents’ charts as well. Anthropometric and vital signs measurement including blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation were abstracted from resident’s charts.
