Two municipalities, Tosu and Naha, in the western area of Japan were added during the second collect of information and participants aged between 50 and 75 years were recruited. Tosu is a city in the Kyushu area, and Naha is a city in Okinawa.

The survey was composed of two parts: a self-completion questionnaire (SCQ) and a computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) section. The SCQ included questions about lifestyle and health, and the CAPI collected information about the individual and his family, memory, cognitive ability and hypothetical questions, employment, retirement, health of respondent and spouse, income and consumption, housing and assets, and use of and expenditure on Medicare care and nursing care services.

Grip strength was also measured.
