Supplementary Information

JHS participants were recruited from four sources: 1) previous participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARIC), 2) random selection from a drivers' license registry, 3) volunteers from the communities, and 4) family members of participants.

Data Collection Event

JHS - Exam 2

During the clinic examination, many measurements were performed including: anthropometry (weight, standing height, neck girth, waist girth and hip circumference), body composition (bioimpedance), blood pressure, electrocardiogram, magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scan.

Participants also completed interviews and questionnaires regarding medication and supplements intake, medical history (including renal disease medical history) and prevalence and incidence of cerebrovascular disease (stroke, transient ischemic attack and related procedures).

Blood and urine samples were also collected.
