The home induction interview collected a variety of health and sociocultural data such as household composition, personal and family health history, physical activity, tobacco use, healthcare access and use, global stress, social support, and sociodemographic and socioeconomic position. The participants also completed self-administered questionnaires about emotional support, interactive relationships, material support, self-esteem, coping strategies, religion and spirituality.

During the clinic examination, many measurements were performed including: anthropometry (weight, standing height, neck girth and waist girth), blood pressure, 12-lead electrocardiogram, echocardiography, carotid ultrasonography and pulmonary function testing. During their clinic visit, participants also completed interviews and questionnaires regarding medication and supplements intake, medical history, symptoms (stroke, respiratory symptoms and chest pain), cardiovascular disease procedures, reproductive history, lifestyle (tobacco use, alcohol and drug consumption, physical activity), nutrition (diet-food frequency questionnaire) and discrimination. Blood was also collected by venipuncture.

Participants completing the baseline clinic visit were provided with materials and instructions for a 24-hour urine collection, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, physical activity monitoring and hassles and mood inventory.
