The population is composed of non-permanent residents who received permits since 1980 prior to their admission as permanent residents in Canada including taxfilers and non-taxfilers.

Since 1980, the Non-permanent Resident File has collected information about sociodemographics, permits (permit type, expiration date, number of permits), admission dates, changes in intended occupation, skill level and level of study, and date of death in the database. Since 2005, information about citizenship acquisition, express entry data, wages, children, and settlement has also been collected. Information about death is collected from Statistics Canada’s Amalgamated Mortality Database (AMDB) and the Canadian Mortality Database.
