The population is composed of men and women from Novosibirsk, Russia, and aged 45-69 years old at baseline.

To determine mortality, the death register developed by the Institute of Internal Medicine, which is based on data from medical death certificates, the Novosibirsk office of the State Statistical Bureau (Goscomstat) and from the population registration bureau (ZAGS) is used.

Since 2011, individual mortality records based on death certificates in Russia are not available to researchers. Alternative methods have been used to collect mortality data since 2011 but the death rate in the Russian cohort since 2011 is underestimated. Efforts are currently under way to retrospectively collect data on missing deaths.

In order to identify, confirm and validate incident non-fatal cardiovascular events, the same questionnaire is sent out every three years to identify the non-fatal cardiovascular events, which will be confirmed using discharge reports and hospital/medical records.
