The population is composed of non-institutionalized persons 15 years of age or older, living in the 10 provinces of Canada.

For cycle 11 and cycle 16 residents of the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut as well as full-time residents of institutions were excluded. Households without telephones were excluded from the survey population.

Supplementary Information about selection criteria

In 2002 (Cycle 16) and 2007 (Cycle 21), the target population was all persons aged 45 and over. For cycle 26, pilot survey participants were selected from Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia. For cycle 32, pilot survey participants were selected from Nova Scotia, Québec, and Ontario.

In 1996, the sample was selected by random digit dialing. In 2002, the sample was selected from people who responded to the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) In 2007, the sample was selected among respondents to the GSS-20 (from 2006), who were aged 45 and above during GSS-21 collection, and by random digit dialing before 2002. In 2012, the sample was selected by random digit dialing. In 2017 and 2018, the sample was selected by a two-stage sampling design. The sampling units are the groups of telephone numbers. The final stage units are individuals within the identified households where only one eligible person per household to be interviewed were selected.

Data Collection Event

GSS-CCR - Survey 2018 (Cycle 32)

Socio-demographic information, such as age, sex, education, religion, immigrant status, place of birth, Indigenous group, and population group/visible minority status, was collected. The survey collected information about care and social support, disability, health and well-being, and society and community, including the types (including questions on the types of help provided and received for long-term health conditions, mental or physical disabilities, or problems related to aging) and amount of care family caregivers provide, the kinds and amounts of care Canadians receive, and the unmet needs of those who need care but are not receiving it. An expanded set of questions covers the impact of caregiving on various aspects of the lives of caregivers, such as social and emotional health, employment, and financial consequences. Information was also collected on overall health, employment, housing (accessible housing and the proportion of Canada’s housing stock that is accessible to individuals using a wheelchair), and other socio-demographic characteristics such as birthplace, religion, and language. In addition, information was collected about the characteristics of both family and friend caregivers, as well as those who received formal and informal care.
