The population is composed of nonpregnant married women ages 18 to 45, who have no children or one child, who are planning to get pregnant within the next two years, and are allocated to the control group. The women receive 100 tablets of iron and folate supplements, and information sessions about health, lifestyle, breastfeeding, immunizations and infant weaning foods with a health worker. They are also encouraged to have an institutional delivery and necessary vaccinations during pregnancy.

Information is collected about medical, treatment, and drug history, adverse events (homicidal behaviours, death, diseases), COVID-19 (symptoms, diagnosis, employment status), smoking and alcohol history, diet, food security, physical activity (Global Physical Activity Questionnaire), sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), stress, anxiety (General Anxiety Disorder-7), depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9), general self-efficacy (General Self-Efficacy Scale), sociodemographic characteristics, and socioeconomic status. Weight, body composition, and blood pressure measurements are collected. An oral glucose tolerance test for gestational diabetes is performed. Blood and urine samples are collected. Saliva samples are collected from a subset of the population.
