The initial sample of respondents for the CogUSA study consisted of individuals living in the United States, born in 1956 or earlier, and their significant others regardless of age.

The wave 2 face-to-face interview included an extensive cognitive battery, personality tests, risk-taking information (driving, financial, sport or leisure and health risk), an occupational questionnaire and assessments of sensory abilities (vision and hearing). The cognitive battery included the STOP and GO switching task, a vigilance task, a number of tests from the Woodcock-Johnson psychoeducational test battery (number series, retrieval fluency, verbal analogies, spatial relations, picture vocabulary, auditory working memory, visual matching, incomplete words, concept formation, calculation, and word attack), and the Wechsler abbreviated scale of intelligence.
