This population is composed of people 65 years of age and older living in the 10 provinces or three territorial capitals.

Exclusions: persons living in the three territories outside of the capitals; persons living on reserves and other Aboriginal settlements in the provinces; full-time members of the Canadian Forces; the institutionalized population and residents of certain remote regions.

Within each household, one individual aged 65+ was selected based on specific instructions within the letter they received (or provided by the interviewer if they responded by phone). The instructions used the age of household members to determine who was selected, and varied from one household to another. For some households, the oldest member was selected, others the second oldest, or the youngest, etc. These letters were randomly assigned to the selected dwellings ensuring that the selected individual from within the dwelling was random.

Data Collection Event

CCAHS - Seniors - Survey

In the first part, information was collected from an electronic questionnaire about socio-demographics characteristics, general health(current health and chronic conditions, health behavior and health assessment) and exposure to COVID-19(symptoms, health status, risk of contraction and risk factors). In the second part, a blood sample was collected through an at-home finger-prick blood test to determine the presence of COVID-19 antibodies.
