The population is composed of non-institutionalized adults, men and women, aged 40 and more, with a normal post bronchodilator spirometry, who are never smokers and without respiratory diseases.

Questionnaires were used to collect information on sociodemographic, smoking history and work exposure, consequences of health problems for employment, symptoms and disability; global chest symptoms, capacity of daily living, medication, co-morbid conditions, lifestyle such as dietary habits and physical activities and health status, respiratory disease and psychosocial characteristics such as anxiety and depression. Spirometry (pre-and post post bronchodilator test), tests of pulmonary function (PFT), cardio pulmonary exercise testing (CPET), physical activity, a multi detector CT scan (MDCT) were completed. A blood sample was collected. Health care utilization (including use of medications), health outcomes and mortality information was collected using provincial health care administrative and vital statistic databases.
