The population is composed of non-institutionalized adults, men and women, aged 40 and more, with a normal post bronchodilator spirometry, who are ever smokers.

Questionnaires were used to collect information on sociodemographic, smoking history and work exposure, consequences of health problems for employment, symptoms and disability; global chest symptoms, capacity of daily living, medication, co-morbid conditions, lifestyle such as dietary habits and physical activities and health status, respiratory disease, COPD and psychosocial characteristics such as anxiety and depression. Spirometry (pre-and post post bronchodilator test), a six minute walk test and a COPD assessment test were completed. A blood sample was collected as well. Health care utilization (including use of medications), health outcomes and mortality information was collected using provincial health care administrative and vital statistic databases.
