BUKHALI - Mothers - Intervention
The population is composed of women 18 to 28 years old who live in the township of Soweto and are randomly allocated to the intervention group. In the intervention group, participants receive micronutrient supplements, resource material, individualized health feedback, free HIV and pregnancy testing, a specialized health curriculum, and discuss their challenges and priorities as young women living in Soweto and their perceptions of the intervention. To continue participating in this study, women must be pregnant within 18 months of enrollment.
Data Collection Event
BUKHALI - Mothers Intervention - Pregnancy 10 to 17 weeks
Information is collected about the challenges and priorities for young women in Soweto and the implementation challenges and perceptions of the intervention, demographic details, general health, physical activity (Global Physical Activity Questionnaire), sedentary behaviours, tobacco, alcohol, and drug use (WHO-STEPS, AUDIT-Questionnaire), diet, food security, sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), medication and supplement intake, health service utilization, adverse events (homicidal behaviours, death, diseases), COVID-19 (symptoms, diagnosis, employment status), stress, stressful life events, general self-efficacy (General Self-Efficacy Scale), depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9), anxiety (General Anxiety Disorder-7), relationship satisfaction, and social support.
Height, arm and waist circumferences, weight, blood pressure readings, and skinfold tests are collected.
Blood and urine samples are collected. An oral glucose tolerance test for gestational diabetes is performed.
An ultrasound is performed on participants.
