The population is composed of Alberta's residents aged 35 to 69 years who had no history of cancer, other than non-melanoma skin cancer.

Using the Updated Health & Lifestyle Questionnaire (UHLQ) and Physical Activity & Nutrition Survey (PANS) information was collected about general health, personal medical history, lifetime history, family health history, cancer screening, paps and mammograms, reproductive health, sun exposure, tobacco use, passive smoking exposure, alcohol use, stress, social support, spirituality, sleep pattern and/or shift work, demographics, employment status and occupational history, diet history, fruit and vegetable intake, physical activity, sedentary behaviours, primary care service utilization, residential history, and body measurements. Beginning in 2011, the CORE questionnaire replaced the UHLQ/PANS for all participants. Changes from UHLQ/PANS included using the short-form IPAQ, a briefer nutrition survey, and removal of place of longest residence and sun protection information. The CORE questionnaire also added more extensive coverage of family disease history, mobility status and self-reported anthropometric measurements. Overall, the CORE questionnaire and combined UHLQ/PANS are considered comparable. In addition to questionnaires, a physical examination including anthropometric measures (sitting height, standing height, weight, percentage body fat, waist, and hip circumference), grip strength, blood pressure, and resting heart rate were taken from participants at the study centres. Blood, urine, and saliva samples were also collected.
