Through a questionnaire, information on age, parity, medical and pregnancy history, cigarette smoking exposure of mother, father and family members, drugs and alcohol exposure, family structure, community of birth, mother tongue, cultural practices, psychosocial characteristics, as well as socioeconomic factors was collected. Dietary information was collected through the use of the Interheart Diet Questionnaire. Information was also collected on maternal activity and sedentary behaviours during pregnancy.

Socioeconomic status was assessed by recording annual household income, employment, and marital status. Information was gathered about chronic stressors in the home, workplace and community and stressful life events. Adequacy of social support to the mother was also measured. Depression in the mother and intimate partner violence were assessed.

Body weight, height and mid upper arm circumference were measured. Maternal BMI was calculated and skinfold thickness (triceps and subscapular) were measured. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured.

All ultrasound reports were obtained and used to establish gestational age and to assess fetal growth characteristics.

Three blood samples were collected during an oral glucose tolerance test: fasting, 60, and 120 minutes. Urine and saliva samples were also taken.
